Watchdog Service restarting/crashing

Hi,
I’m testing backups with version 12.7.34, but get crashed of the Watchdog service on Windows 2022 21H2.
It should stop after 5 min. but somehow crashes and revives. So this loops every 5min. So I put the Watchdog service on disabled.

Would this happen to other installations as well? Is there an alternative or explanation?

kind regards,
Joey

Hello Joey,

Thanks for the logs.

  • SQLBackupAndFTP (Watchdog) is not the main service. By design, it starts, verifies that SQLBackupAndFTP (Database backup) is running, and then stops after ~5 minutes.

  • It also auto-starts if the main service crashes to bring it back up. We don’t see any failures of the main service in your Windows Event Logs.

  • If Watchdog keeps restarting on its own, that’s unusual and may caused by external tools or Windows Service Recovery settings that force stopped services to restart.

If notifications about the SQLBackupAndFTP (Watchdog) service are bothering you, you can simply disable it. It’s optional and, in most cases, not required—especially if you already monitor service health.
