SQLBackupAndFTP Service Fails to Start on Windows Server 2019

Hello everyone,

we’re currently facing an issue with SQLBackupAndFTP not starting on a Windows Server 2019 machine.

Here is a summary of our setup and troubleshooting attempts:

  • OS: Windows Server 2019
  • .NET Framework: 4.7.2
  • SQLBackupAndFTP versions tested: 12.7.30 (latest), 12.5.13, and 11.3.12
  • Problem: The SQLBackupAndFTP service fails to start with all tested versions.
  • Tried starting the service manually (as a process using the method described in the SQLBackupAndFTP documentation), but that also failed.
  • We are using the Free license of SQLBackupAndFTP to back up a PostgreSQL database.

We noticed that the service stopped creating backups after January 13th, 2025. On that same day, the customer used a tool called Drive Snapshot (https://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/), which is used to create full disk backups. It is a standalone .exe application and, according to the customer’s IT team, it did not require or perform any installation.

We suspect there might be a conflict or side effect from using Drive Snapshot, but we haven’t found any direct link or logs indicating what is preventing SQLBackupAndFTP from running.

Has anyone experienced similar issues, especially in relation to disk imaging tools like Drive Snapshot?

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Hello Janis,

Thank you for your message and details.

When you tried starting the service manually using the method described in our documentation, could you please let us know what error occurred when running the following command?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\SQLBackupAndFTP\sqlbak.service.exe" -console

This information will help us better understand the cause of the issue and assist you more effectively.
