Distant SQL Server backup done but not found

Hello to all,

I use a server with several VMs on it. My SQL Server 2014 is set up on one of these VM and I can access it from my server with any user.
The application connects successfully to my SQL Server and create a backup in the SQL Server backup directory.

So, the application find the directory to check the free space, can connect to SQL Server to create the backup, but the can’t find the file afterwards. I have checked each time and the file is properly created each time in the directory.

It means that my baclups are done but they stay on the SQL Server VM (instead of being sent to a secure cloud), they are not zipped, they are not deleted after a month.

Did someone had a similar problem? Do you know how I can solve this?

Hi Juliane_Bosch,

Thanks for the details, we have checked the log. This error message means that Local System user hasn’t enough permissions to the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQL\

Could you please check it?

Thanks Alexander,

Actually, I gave a full access to the group « Everyone » on that directory but it didn’t changed anything. If I try to access it from my main server (where SQLBackupAndFTP is installed), it works :
\172.16.16.40\c$\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQL\Backup\

What seems to be happening is this:

  • the app is installed on the main server, SQL Server is installed on a VM
  • the app connects to the VM where SQL Server is set up
  • the app checks SQL Server default directory ON the main server (it doesn’t exist so it creates it)
  • the app orders to SQL Server to create backup and SQL Server does it in the default directory on the VM
  • the app search the directory on the main server (instead of the one on the VM) and can’t find the backup file

Hi Juliane_Bosch,

Yes, you are right. If SQLBackupAndFTP is installed on another computer than SQL Server, please use Microsoft SQL Server (remote) connection type at the “Connect to Server” window.

SQLBackupAndFTP

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yes, it worked that way.
Thanks a lot for your help !
